Early Career and SHOOTO

Jake Shields began his Mixed Martial Arts career by filling in for an injured SLO Kickboxing teammate. And after only a few weeks of training, albeit under future hall-of-famer Chuck Liddell, Shields won his first match with a convincing TKO over Paul Harrison on October 23, 1999.

After a second win Shields suffered his first loss as a professional and the only stoppage loss of his entire fighting life. Continuing to work on smaller shows Jake accumulated a record of 7-3 which included wins over Jeremy Jackson and Shannon Ritch, before joining up with the SHOOTO organization.

At the star-studded Year End Show 2002, featuring Joachim Hansen, Nick Diaz, Takanori Gomi, Vitor Ribeiro, Tatsuya Kawajiri and Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Shields was faced with his first truly elite foe - Hayato Sakurai. After three rounds of action the judges unanimously pronounced Jake Shields the winner, "Mach" Sakurai had been beaten, for only the third time. The other two men who owned victories over Sakurai at the time are MMA luminaries Anderson Silva, and Matt Hughes.

Following up on his success with back-to-back decision wins over first Milton Vieira, and second Akira Kikuchi, becoming the first man to ever beat the Japanese star. A draw with Kazuo Mizaki, and win over Ray Cooper then lead to rematch with Kikuchi. Akira won the second battle, and also Shield's Shooto World championship.

Rumble Young Man, Rumble

In January of 2006, the 12-4-1 Shields began his stint with Rumble on the Rock. Once there a series of high-profile decision wins followed. First Shields won against former UFC Middleweight Champion Dave Menne. Next came Pancrase and WEC standout Carlos Condit. Shields' last RotR bout saw him win in a showdown with top contender Yushin Okami. Jake remains Rumble on the Rock's reigning 175lb. champion.

Present day and EliteXC

After parting ways with RotR Shields scored a TKO in his next fight winning against Steve Berger. Since then no man has made it to the end of the first round when facing Shields. Jake's next victim was Ray Steinbeiss, who lost to a Guillotine Choke, and Shields then forced Ido Pariente to submit to a Rear Naked Choke.

Jake Shields then signed with ProElite's EliteXC brand to take on Renato "Charuto" Verissimo. Subsequent to his TKO over Verissimo, Shields then fought fellow submission artist Mike Pyle, defeating him with a first-frame Rear Naked Choke.

Shields most recent match pit him against top welterweight Nick Thompson, for the vacant EliteXC 170lb. belt. Jake, who hasn't lost since 2004, in currently set to face Paul Daley (live on CBS) Saturday October, 4, 2008.
