Early Career
Frankie "The Answer" Edgar (born October 16, 1981) is a decorated wrestler turned Mixed Martial Artist. Included among his wrestling accolades are two trips to the New Jersey state championships, as well as qualifying, for four years running, as a NCAA national tournament competitor. Rumor has it that Edgar, confident in his abilities, took on his first pro bout with less than two weeks notice on October 29, 2005. The result? An Edgar TKO win over Mark Getto at 4:21 of the very first round.
His initial victory sparked a streak that would eventually total eight wins in a row. The next victim for "The Answer" was the unfortunate Jay Isip, who awakened after his match with Edgar only to be informed that he had been choked into unconsciousness. Returning to Ring of Combat for a second fight, Edgar caught Steve Macabe in a Guillotine Choke, for the win. At least Macabe had a chance to tap. Two favorable decisions closed out the early chapter of Frankie's career.
UFC Career
UFC 67 - All or Nothing played host to Edgar's first appearance inside the Octagon. After fifteen frantic minutes Frankie Edgar emerged as the first man to beat standout Tyson Griffin. Both men earned 'fight of the night' honors for the performance. Faced with another grappler, this time Brazilian Jiu-jitsu expert, Mark Bocek, Edgar once again showed off his superior wrestling skills, winning via ground and pound TKO in the first frame of the contest.
Once again Edgar found himself playing the role of underdog, in a UFC - 78 match up with Miletich Fighting Sytems product, Spencer Fisher. Following his game plan to the letter, "The Answer" was able to take down Fisher, and control him, grinding out a unanimous decision for his effort.
"Fight fire with fire", the old saying goes. The modern amalgam may just be "Fight wrestling with wrestling" and that is exactly what another high-caliber wrestler, Gray Maynard, did in his meeting with Edgar. Maynard was able to smother and dominate Frankie like no one before, controlling a slow-paced fifteen minute struggle between the two. Maynard won a unanimous decision, and Frankie suffered his first loss ever as a professional fighter.
Edgar's most recent match saw him square off with former title contender Hermes Franca. Frankie proved to be "The Answer" in that contest, and went home the winner with another unanimous decision.
Edgar had to pull out of his next proposed bout against Matt Wiman at UFC: Fight for the Troops due to injury. He will instead make his return to competition at UFC 98 on May 23, 2009 when he faces former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk.
