[edit] Early Career
Due to a chance encounter with Ultimate Fighting Championship match maker, Joe Silva, Frank Mir III had caught the eye of the industries biggest scout, before he'd even had his professional debut. On the advice of Silva, Mir began his fighting career in smaller shows. Mir won his first bout with a decision over Jerome Smith at HOOKnSHOOT: Showdown on July 14, 2001.
A Triangle Choke victory over Dan Quinn at an IFC show once got the attention of UFC brass. Subsequently Mir was contracted by the UFC to face Roberto Traven, whom he submitted by Armbar at 1:05 of the first round. A second Octagon win followed, at UFC 36, this time winning via shoulder lock over Pete Wlliams. Mir had become a UFC regular, and hasn't fought outside of the promotion since joining it.
[edit] Broken Bones
Rebounding from his first loss, to Ian Freeman, Mir racked up three straight wins. He beat David "Tank" Abbot and Wes Sims, the latter twice. The win-streak earned Frank his first crack at the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
In a contest for the vacant UFC Heavyweight belt, Mir stood as David had versus Goliath. Mir's opponent, Tim Sylvia towered over him dwarfing Mir by some seven inches, and nearly thirty pounds. Luckily for Mir, the size difference wasn't the disparity that mattered in this match, with the gulf between the two's proficiency in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu taking center stage. At just 50 seconds into fight Mir was on his back and had Sylvia's arm trapped, looking for an Armbar, or Triangle Choke. As Sylvia withdrew his arm to counter, it broke - in two places.
Unfortunately the newly crowned champ's reign would be cut short by another broken bone. On 17 September 2004, Mir was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle. The accident caused a break in Mir's femur and numerous ligament tears to his knee. Just like Sylvia's arm, Mir's leg was broken in two places. Major surgery was needed to repair the bone in his leg. And a long period of recovery would follow.
[edit] Comeback Trail
After spending nearly two years recuperating after the injury, Frank Mir once again stepped into the Octagon. The fight would serve as a rude awakening for Mir, who lost the bout by stoppage to rookie Marcio Cruz. Mir then went 1-1 over the course of his next couple fights, losing to Brandon Vera.
Seemingly rejuvenated after his most recent defeat, Frank Mir submitted Antoni Hardonk by first round Kimura, looking like the Frank Mir of old. His next foe would be Brock Lesnar. Early on in the match Lesnar scored a dynamic takedown and was raining down blows from side control. Mir jkept his cool, however, and was able to catch the monstrous Lesnar in a fight-ending Kneebar. That lock secured not only the win, but also a long-awaited tile match for Mir.
Frank Mir is currently being featured as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, season eight. At the end of the show's TV run, he will face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the UFC Interim Heavyweight Title, with the winner of that eventual contest slated to face winner of a Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar showdown to unify the belts and crown a true Heavyweight Champion.
