Profile
Ed "Short Fuse" Herman (born October 2, 1980) is an American professional mixed martial artist who fights out of Team Quest.
He stands 6 ft. 2 in. (188 cm) tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
He was TUF 3's middleweight runner-up and currently fights as a middleweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Ed Herman made his professional mixed martial arts debut on August 23, 2003 at a Quest Promotion event in Gresham, Oregon. Herman was defeated by Shane Davis via armbar at 2:18 of round 1.
Herman picked up his first professional victory in his next outing as he submitted Rich Guerin with a keylock at a PPKA event in January of 2004.
Following the Guerin victory, Herman went on and picked up five straight victories, all of which by some kind of finish and all of which coming in 2004. His list of victories included future UFC competitor, Derek Downey (TKO) and future Strikeforce competitor, Cory Devela.
His six fight win streak was broken at a Pancrase event in July of 2004 by future PRIDE welterweight grand prix victor, Kazuo Misaki. Midway through the second round, Misaki latched onto an arm triangle choke and put Herman to sleep.
Herman bounced back a month later when he scored a triangle choke victory over Brian Ebersole at a SportFight event.
In October of 2004, Herman was choked unconscious again, this time by future UFC competitor, Joe Doerksen and by triangle choke in the third round. The fight was Herman's 9th of 2004.
"Short Fuse" kicked off 2005 with a decision win over Chuck Liddell training partner, Glover Teixeira in March. The Teixeira win was the first of a four fight win streak that culminated with his acceptance onto TUF 3. In those four victories, Herman scored stoppage victories over notable fighters, UFC veteran, Nick Thompson and former UFC middleweight champion, Dave Menne.
The Ultimate Fighter
With an impressive 11-3 record, Herman was brought in as a middleweight contestant for The Ultimate Fighter Season 3. Herman was selected last on Ken Shamrock's team, a move he was none too happy with for the duration of the show.
Opposing coach, Tito Ortiz, regretted not picking Herman and instead chose to delay picking Herman to fight any of his members until the last round, hoping to make Herman complacent. The ploy did not work however and Herman moved into the semi finals with an armbar win over Danny Abaddi.
In the semi finals, Herman faced Ortiz's Rory Singer. A close first round led to a not so close second round with Herman sinking in a rear naked choke 2:31 in to get the tap and move into the finals to face Team Punishment's Kendall Grove.
In an extremely close bout that saw both fighters on the verge of finishing the other, the judges awarded a unanimous decision to Kendall Grove. After the bout, UFC president Dana White decided to also give Herman a six figure UFC contract because of the exciting nature and closeness of the bout.
UFC Career
At UFC: The Final Chapter, Herman made his first post-TUF UFC appearance when he faced Jason MacDonald on the main card. Midway through the first round, Herman was caught in a triangle choke which he eventually tapped to at 2:43 of round 1. After the bout, Herman regretted his decision saying, "I should have went out like a man instead of tapping like a bitch.".
Just over three months later at UFC Fight Night 8, Herman got his first UFC victory when he tapped Chris Price with an armbar, 2:58 into round 1.
In June of 2007, Herman picked up "Submission of the Night" honors when he submitted TUF 4's Scott Smith with a rear naked choke at UFC 72.
Herman picked up "Knockout of the Night" honors at UFC 78 when he knocked Joe Doerksen cold in a rematch from their 2004 SportFight bout. Doerksen was a late replacement for former UFC middleweight title challenger, David Terrell.
At UFC 83, Herman faced off against highly regarded Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, Demian Maia on the show's undercard. Herman's three fight UFC win streak was snapped when Maia caught him in a triangle choke from guard. Maia rolled Herman into mount with the triangle still on and then beat on his head until Herman went unconscious.
With a 3-3 record in the UFC, Herman faced Alan Belcher on the main card of UFC Fight Night 15 in September of 2008. In a close bout that saw Belcher get the better of the stand up and Herman score with takedowns, the fight went to a split decision with Belcher geting the nod on two cards.
Herman will return to UFC action at UFC 97 in an effort to end his two fight losing streak. He will face former UFC middleweight contender, David Loiseau on the show's undercard.
