Profile
Dustin "McLovin" Hazelett (born April 29, 1986) is an American professional mixed martial artist and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Jorge Gurgel.
He stands 6 ft. 1 in. (185 cm) tall and has fought in both the lightweight and welterweight division. He currently fights as a welterweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Dustin Hazelett made his professional mixed martial arts debut on October 23, 2004 for the King of the Cage promotion. He faced and defeated Justin Hons via arm bar submission in the first round.
Eight months later, Hazelett returned to the cage against future PRIDE veteran, Jason Ireland. Hazelett defeated Ireland via triangle choke in round 1.
Hazelett suffered his first professional loss one month later against future UFC competitor, Junior Assuncao. He was defeated via TKO at 4.05 of round 1.
After rebounding with a submission win over John Shackelford, Hazelett suffered another defeat, this time a decision loss to Dereck Keasley.
Now with a record of 3-2, Hazelett put together four wins in his next four fights which included a split decision victory over Rhalan Gracie and a seven second KO victory over Chad Reiner.
UFC Career
Hazelett's four fight win streak earned him a contract with the UFC. Hazelett made his UFC debut on the undercard of the highly publicised, UFC: The Final Chapter which was headlined by the third fight between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock.
Hazelett faced ground wizard, Tony DeSouza on the card and suffered his first submission loss as he was caught in a kimura 3.59 into the first round by the wily veteran.
At UFC 67, Hazelett bounced back from his disappointing debut in the lightweight division against Diego Saraiva. Hazelett's size and reach were too much for Saraiva who lost a one-sided decision.
Hazelett impressed many at UFC 72 when he faced Steven Lynch. Hazelett defused the fired up Lynch initially before latching onto an anaconda choke which forced the tap 2.50 into round 1.
At UFC Fight Night 11, Hazelett stepped in to replace the injured Mike Swick against Canadian, Jonathan Goulet. Hazelett's superior grappling was too much for Goulet who was caught in an arm bar in quick time.
Sporting a three fight win streak in the UFC, Hazelett got a step up in competition when he faced TUF 1 veteran and top ranked welterweight, Josh Koscheck at UFC 82. Hazelett looked impressive early as he rocked Koscheck with a head kick and had a triangle choke attempt late in the first round. However in the second round, Koscheck landed a head kick of his own which knocked Hazelett to the ground. Koscheck pounced on the wounded fighter with a barrage of punches that earned him the stoppage victory.
Now having experienced the upper echelon in the 170 lbs. division, a confident and rejuvenated Hazelett returned to action at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale. He faced TUF 2 veteran, Josh Burkman on the undercard. In a quality bout with an excellent finish, Hazelett's superior jiu jitsu gave Burkman fits and with 20 seconds left in round 2, Hazelett turned a whizzer into a flying arm bar out of nowhere to force the tap. The bout earned Hazelett both submission of the night and fight of the night honors.
Hazelett made his first appearance on a UFC PPV main card at UFC 91 when he faced off against Tamdan McCrory. In a fast paced bout with heavy even exchanges, the fight hit the mat where the advantage swung to Hazelett dramatically. Utilizing the rubber guard, Hazelett transitioned to an omaplata which had McCrory trapped. Shortly thereafter, Hazelett transitioned to a painful looking reverse arm bar which had McCrory quickly tapping. Hazelett's performance earned him submission of the night honors once again.
