Profile
Drew "The Master" Fickett (born December 14, 1979) is an American professional mixed martial artist training out of Southwest MMA.
He stands 5 ft. 10 in. (178 cm) tall and fights in the welterweight (170 lbs.) division.
Fickett is a UFC veteran and is currently unsigned to any promotion.
Early Career
Drew Fickett made his professional mixed martial arts debut on April 7, 1999 for the Rage in the Cage promotion. He was victorious in his debut as he decisioned Shawn Polso after three, three minute rounds.
Fighting almost exclusively for Rage in the Cage in 2000, Fickett fought eleven times, winning all eleven bouts with nine of those wins coming via either submission or knockout.
After taking 2001 off, Fickett returned in March, 2002 against future TUF 4 competitor, Edwin Dewees. This would be his first professional defeat as Dewees was declared the split decision victor after three rounds.
Fickett bounced back with an armbar submission win over John Lansing before earning revenge against Dewees in his next bout via decision.
After two more victories, Fickett suffered defeat again, this time a submission defeat (triangle choke) to Landon Showalter.
Just over a month later, Fickett got back on track with the most impressive win of his career to date as defeated Dennis Hallman via split decision.
Fickett closed out 2003 with a submission win over Greg Bell before going 6-0 in 2004 that included submission wins over Carlo Prater and Fabio Holanda and a decision win over a green Kenny Florian that earned Fickett the Combat Zone welterweight championship.
UFC
With a record of 24-2, Fickett was called in to make his UFC debut at UFC 51 in February, 2005. He faced off against a yound and upcoming, Nick Diaz and was pounded out with strikes in 4:40 of round 1.
Rebound wins outside of the UFC over Robert Briggs and TUF 5's Brandon Melendez followed, before Fickett returned to UFC competition at UFC Fight Night 1 in August, 2005. He met the always game Josh Neer and impressively choked him unconscious with a rear naked choke in 1:35 of round 1.
Fickett was then matched up against TUF 1's Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 2 and was having a tough time negating Koscheck's wrestling for the majority of the three rounds. Behind on points and with under a minute left in the final round, Fickett landed a vicious knee that dropped Koscheck. Fickett immediately transitioned to his back and choked him unconscious to snatch his second UFC victory.
He would come crashing back down to earth in January, 2006 at UFC Fight Night 3 when he was surprisingly submitted with a guillotine choke by TUF 2's Josh Burkman in just 1:07 of round 1.
A come from behind submission win over Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 61 got him back on track but his UFC record would drop to 3-3 at UFC Fight Night 7 in December when he was tossed around by Karo Parisyan en route to a decision defeat.
At UFC Fight Night 9, Fickett defeated Keita Nakamura via unanimous decision but would leave the UFC after the victory.
2007 - Present
Out of the UFC, Fickett began to string some wins together as he knocked off Anthony Lapsley and Mark Weir in his first two bouts following his departure.
In March, 2008, Fickett replaced Nick Diaz in a bout against Jae Suk Lim at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Le. Fickett impressively dispatched Lim with a gullotine choke in the first round.
The win was to earn Fickett a shot at Jake Shields' EliteXC welterweight championship but after pulling out of the bout with an injury only to take a bout against Jeff Horlacher shortly after the offer was recinded and question marks began to arise about Fickett.
After dropping his next bout to the unheralded Richard Villes, and then dispatching Joe Manzello six days after that, Fickett was to face Jay Hieron at Affliction: Day of Reckoning in October. When the event was rescheduled, Fickett instead took up a fight with TUF 7 cast-off, Jesse Taylor and was pounded out in just 1:42 of round 1.
Things went from bad to worse for Fickett as personal problems with alcohol began to become public on the Internet while his performances inside the cage began to suffer.
After splitting two bouts in November, Fickett would lose his first four bouts in 2009 (three via TKO) and in July he showed up to a fight against Shannon Ritch drunk and was not allowed to fight.
