Pre-Event Notes

Early rumors suggested the Eddie Alvarez would face Gesias Cavalcante at this event but Alvarez was unable to due to committments to the Bellator Fighting Championships. "JZ" was then rumored to face Daisuke Nakamura but a knee injury forced him out and the bout was nixed.

Gegard Mousasi had to pull out of his semi-final bout against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou due to an injury sustained in a grappling exhibition with Fedor Emelianenko. Bob Sapp filled in for Mousasi having previously been defeated by Ikuhisa Minowa in the opening round.

Kazuyuki Miyata and Takeshi Yamazaki fought at DEEP: 42nd Impact to determine who would face Daiki Hata in the alternate bout for the featherweight grand prix.

Results

  • Featherweight Grand Prix Final Bout: Bibiano Fernandes defs. Hiroyuki Takaya via split decision to win the 2009 DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix and become the new DREAM featherweight champion.

Fernandes and Takaya went to war for the fifteen minutes with Takaya using excellent takedown defense to keep Fernandes at bay while blasting away with vicious power punches. Fernandes gave more than his share back and in each round had Takaya's back while standing against the ring ropes only for the fighters to be seperated. It was the positional advantage as well as a knockdown in the second round that proved telling for Fernandes as he received the nod from two of the judges.
