Profile
Dong Sik Yoon (born August 24, 1972) is a Korean professional mixed martial artist and a highly decorated Judo black belt.
He stands 6 ft. (183 cm) tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
Yoon is a PRIDE veteran and currently competes as a middleweight for DREAM.
PRIDE and K-1
Dong Sik Yoon made his professional mixed martial arts debut in the first round of PRIDE's 2005 Middleweight (205 lbs.) Grand Prix on April 23, 2005. He faced Japanese legend, Kazushi Sakuraba in a highly anticipated bout that ended quickly as Sakuraba demolished Yoon with punches in just 36 seconds.
In his next bout at PRIDE 30, Yoon met Olympic Judo Gold Medalist, Makoto Takimoto. The bout held extra significance in that Yoon had defeated Takimoto previously in Judo competition. He would not replicate that result however as Takimoto controlled the majority of the bout to win by unanimous decision after three rounds.
Still in search of his first victory, PRIDE did Yoon no favors as he was matched up against top flight 205 lbs. competitor, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at PRIDE 31. Yoon hung in bravely for the three rounds but wound up again losing a unanimous decision.
In his last bout for PRIDE, Yoon was again thrown in the deep end. Still unable to swim as he was never given a chance to learn, Yoon was defeated by former UFC middleweight champion, Murilo Bustamante by decision after two rounds at PRIDE: Bushido 13.
With the demise of PRIDE, Yoon moved over to K-1. He made his debut at their first US show in June of 2007 against vicious Dutch K-1 striker, Melvin Manhoef. Remarkably, Yoon submitted the Dutch wrecking machine with an armbar in the second round to earn his first professional victory.
Three months later, Yoon earned his second win as he scored another armbar submission win over a striking specialist in Zelg Galesic. A third consecutive armbar submission one month later over Fabio Silva at fans christening the move, the "Dongbar".
DREAM
In 2008, K-1's MMA branch, HERO's closed down in favor of Fighting and Entertainment Group's new collaboration with former PRIDE staff, DREAM. Yoon was brought over into the new promotion and was selected as one of 16 competitors in DREAM's 2008 Middleweight (185 lbs.) Grand Prix. Yoon met PRIDE veteran, Shungo Oyama at DREAM 2 and walked away with a unanimous decision after two rounds to get his record back to an even 4-4.
Just under two months later, at DREAM 4, Yoon was eliminated from the tournament by eventual winner, Gegard Mousasi. Yoon made the fight a tough one for Mousasi was ultimately outworked in the end.
At DREAM 6 in September of 2008, Yoon faced fellow tournament competitor, Andrews Nakahara. Considered the favorite heading into the bout, Yoon was upset in the second round as he was stopped with punches just 30 seconds in.
