Profile
Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim (born November 17, 1981) is a Korean professional mixed martial artist and fourth degree black belt in Judo.
He stands 6 ft. 1 in. tall and fights in the welterweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Dong Hyun Kim made his professional mixed martial arts debut on April 10, 2004 at Spirit MC 3 against Young Ahm Noh. Kim defeated Noh after three rounds by unanimous decision.
Five months later, Kim picked up his second professional victory with another unanimous decision, this time over opponent, Hyung Kwang Kim.
After a brief hiatus from MMA due to frustration with pay and a lack of suitable training partners, Kim then moved over to the Japanese based DEEP organization and began training at Wajyutsu Keisyukai where he was a sparring partner of UFC middleweight, Yushin Okami. He made his DEEP debut against Mitsunori Tanimura in May of 2006 and submitted his opponent with a rear naked choke in the first round.
After picking up another decision win just over two months later, Kim went on a five fight knockout stretch. The variety of knockouts ranged from punches to knees to slams. The last of which came in a non title bout against welterweight champion, Hidehiko Hasegawa.
On October 10, 2007 Kim rematched Hidehiko Hasegawa in a bout for the welterweight championship. The two fought to a controversial three round draw.
UFC Career
Kim left the DEEP organization to sign a contract with the PRIDE Fighting Championships, however when PRIDE was bought out by ZUFFA, the parent company of the UFC and WEC, Kim was approached by talent scouts from the WEC. Kim's management instead pushed for a contract with the UFC due to the fact that the UFC, unlike the WEC, was televised in Korea.
ZUFFA obliged and Kim made his UFC debut at UFC 84 on the undercard against Jason Tan. Kim impressed many with his judo game that seemed to translate well to the UFC, along with his use of elbows that he used to batter Tan with continously. Early in the third round, the fight was called and Kim was announced as the victory by TKO.
At UFC 88, "Stun Gun" was matched up against TUF 7's Matt Brown in a bout that was originally on the undercard but was pushed to the main card following a back injury to Karo Parisyan. Kim looked good in the first round as he got into quality positions and had Brown's back a number of times. In the second round Kim began to slow and Brown began to land some good shots. The third round was close as Kim got some takedowns while Brown worked from the bottom. When the judges decision came back, Kim was awarded the fight on two out of the three scorecards giving him the split decision victory.
Kim was again featured on the main card in his next fight as he faced Karo Parisyan at UFC 94. Kim looked good in the first round again, getting into a number of the same positions as the Brown fight. In the second, Karo fought back even managing to land a judo throw on the decorated judo black belt. The third was a tight affair with little happening. Kim was not on the right end of the split this time around as two judges scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Parisyan.
