Profile
Dan Miller (born June 30, 1981) is an American professional mixed martial artist and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
He stands 6 ft. 0 in. tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
He was the last ever IFL middleweight champion and currently fights as a middleweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
He is the older brother of UFC lightweight, Jim Miller.
Early MMA Career
Dan Miller made his professional mixed martial arts debut on November 19, 2005 for the Reality Fighting organization. He faced off against Tenyeh Dixon and submitted his opponent with a triangle choke just 2:20 into round 1.
Miller returned at the next Reality Fighting event and picked up his second victory as he armbarred Jay Coleman once again in the first round.
With just two professional fights, Miller was placed in a No.1 contender's match for the Reality Fighting middleweight title against future UFC competitor, Mike Massenzio. In a close three round fight, Massenzio's top control was adjudged superior to Miller's submission game. Massenzio was awarded the victory and Miller suffered his first professional defeat.
Miller moved away from the Reality Fighting organization and onto the Cage Fury Fighting Championships after the loss. In his first bout for the CFFC he scored a TKO over Dave Perez. The win earned Miller a shot at the CFFC middleweight title, which was held by Lance Everson. Miller made quick work of Everson, submitting the champion with a rear naked choke just 2:26 into round 1 to gain the title.
Miller defended his title a little over six months later via unanimous decision over Jose Rodriguez.
IFL
With a 5-1 career record, Miller got a call up to the IFL as a replacement for an injured Fabio Leopaldo. He fought for Renzo Gracie's New York Pitbulls and faced off against Tokyo Sabres' Dave Phillips in the first fight between the teams in the 2007 IFL Semifinals.
Just over a minute into the bout, Miller latched onto a standing guillotine choke that commentator, Bas Rutten described as the tightest guillotine he had ever seen. Phillips quickly went limp from the hold, and Miller was awarded the victory.
After the fight, Miller had two fights outside of the IFL with a decision victory over future UFC competitor, John Howard and a no contest with Mike Guerin. Both fights took place in the Ring of Combat organization.
Miller made his return to the IFL in May of 2008 when he was given a shot at the IFL middleweight title that was held by Miletich product, Ryan McGivern. Miller was considered to be a little inexperienced for the occasion but surprised many by taking the title off McGivern with a kneebar submission just 3:36 into the first round.
UFC Career
Following the collapse of the IFL, Miller was brought into the UFC along with his brother Jim.
His UFC debut came against Rob Kimmons at UFC Fight Night 15. Miller impressed with a quick rear naked choke of his more experienced opponent.
At UFC 90, Miller stepped in on short notice to replace Ricardo Almeida in a fight against a fellow IFL veteran in Matt Horwich. In a tight affair that was contested primarily on the ground, Miller eked out a unanimous decision victory.
Miller once again filled in on short notice at UFC Fight Night 17 when he replaced Alessio Sakara in a fight against wrestling standout, Jake Rosholt. Miller quickly disposed of his undefeated opponent when he latched onto another nasty guillotine choke that forced the tap at just over a minute in round 1.
