Overview

DEEP is a Japanese mixed martial arts organization promoted by former PRIDE Fighting Championships' Public Relations Director, Shigeru Saeki.

It is considered a second-tier Japanese promotion and a feeder system for promotions like DREAM and in the past, PRIDE.

History

DEEP held its first event, DEEP: 1st Impact on January 8, 2001. Since that time it has played a major role in the Japanese mixed martial arts community as a feeder system to promotions such as PRIDE and more recently DREAM.

It has held elimination bouts for tournament spots in both the DREAM featherweight and welterweight tournaments.

On May 17, 2008, DEEP announced a partnership with fellow Japanese promotion, ZST to share fighters, co-promote shows and eventually unify the promotions.

Rules and Judging

Rounds

  • Non-title bouts are two, five minute rounds
  • Championship bouts are three, five minute rounds

Judging

  • The bout is judged on its entirity with the judges awarding the fight to whoever they think won it overall. This eliminates the possibility of any draws.

Rules

DEEP's rules vary from that of the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts in a number of ways:

  • Stomps and soccer kicks are allowed to the head of a downed opponent, however knees are not.
  • No elbow strikes are permitted.

Weight Classes

DEEP features eight weight classes ranging from bantamweight to Megaton in the Men's class and Flyweight to Lightweight in the Women's.:

Men's

  • Bantamweight - 62 kg (136 lbs.)
  • Featherweight - 65 kg (143 lbs.)
  • Lightweight - 70 kg (154 lbs.)
  • Welterweight - 76 kg (167 lbs.)
  • Middleweight - 84 kg (185 lbs.)
  • Megaton - Open Weight
