Profile

Kevin "Cub" Swanson (born November 2, 1985) is an American professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

He stands 5 ft. 7 in. (170 cm) tall and fights in the featherweight (145 lbs.) division.

Swanson currently fights as a featherweight for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.

Early Career

Cub Swanson made his professional mixed martial arts debut on July 25, 2004 for the Total Combat promotion. He faced future UFC competitor, Shannon Gugerty, and was submitted with a rear naked choke.

Swanson would pick up his first victory in his next bout, when he forced Joe Morales to submit to strikes and would follow that up with four more victories to end 2005 as 5-1.

In his first bout of 2006, Swanson faced Gugerty in a rematch and earned revenge as he pounded him out with punches midway through the second round.

Swanson would finish out 2006 with three more victories to improve his winning run to nine. Amongst those three victories was a come from behind TKO victory over Charlie Valencia at a King of the Cage event.

WEC

Swanson's impressive winning streak earned him a contract with the WEC. He made his debut at WEC 26 in March, 2007 against fellow WEC debutant, Tommy Lee. Cub quickly made it ten in a row as he submitted Lee with a guillotine choke in just 3:17 of round 1.

At WEC 28, Swanson met American Top Team's Micah Miller and scored an impressive unanimous decision win after the three rounds.

In December, 2007, Swanson was awarded the job of welcoming former UFC lightweight champion, Jens Pulver to the WEC. Swanson talked a big game before the bout but couldn't back it up as he was quickly tapped with a guillotine choke in just 35 seconds.

Swanson rebounded with a submission win outside of the WEC before returning at WEC 37 against Japanese brawler, Hiroyuki Takaya. In a spirited fight that earned both guys "Fight of the Night" bonuses, Swanson prevailed via unanimous decision.

At WEC 41, Swanson was matched up against the red hot, Jose Aldo, who had amassed a considerable streak of violent knockouts. Swanson would find himself another victim on that list as just eight seconds in he was blasted with a flying double knee that opened a huge gash on his face and left him turtled up on the mat, forcing the stoppage.

Swanson will look to get back in the win column at WEC 44 when he faces John Franchi.
