Profile

Cole "Magrinho" Miller (born April 26, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist who trains out of American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida where he is a purple belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu Ricardo Liborio.

He stands 6 ft. 1 in. (185 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division (155 lbs.).

He was a quarter finalist on The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 and currently fights as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

His nickname, "Magrinho" means "Skinny" in Portugese. Cole has a younger brother, Micah Miller, who fights in the WEC.

Early Career

Cole Miller made his professional mixed martial arts debut against Harris Norwood at Full Throttle 2 on June 3, 2005. Miller defeated his opponent with a triangle choke submission at 3:14 of round 1.

Another triangle choke victory followed, this time over Chris Mickle, before knocking Tim Honeycutt cold in 23 seconds in his third fight.

In November of 2005, Miller suffered his first professional loss as he dropped a majority decision to Josh Odom.

Miller rebounded from the loss with a TKO over David Love in December of 2005.

Five consecutive submission victories followed for Miller on a variety of smaller promotions. That streak was stopped however with his second professional loss. He lost a unanimous decision to highly ranked featherweight competitor, Takeshi Inoue.

Miller bounced back well again with an armbar victory over John Strawn in his next bout and a split decision victory over Josh Sauder in November of 2006.

The Ultimate Fighter

In early 2007, Miller was selected as a contestant for The Ultimate Fighter Season 5. As one of 16 lightweight contestants in a field that featured a number of highly regarded prospects, Miller got the show kicked off with a triangle choke submission victory over Alan Berube in the first episode.

In the quarter finals, Miller faced Joe Lauzon. The two fighters mirrored each other skill wise and the fight played out accordingly with an even contest for the first round and a half. In the second round, Lauzon connected to some shots to the back of Miller's head that left Miller dazed. Miller groggily vowed to continue on and was stopped shortly thereafter and thus eliminated from the competition.

Miller was brought back for The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale to face one of the season's many whipping boys in Andy Wang. The bout was short lived as Miller dropped Wang with a head kick just over a minute in and followed up with some ground and pound that had the fight stopped at 1:10 of the first round.

UFC Career

Miller's first UFC fight out from under TUF 5's banner came at UFC Fight Night 11 when he faced Leonard Garcia. Miller used his size to overwhelm Garcia and stifle his attack. Miller picked up the unanimous decision after three hard fought rounds.

Just over four months later, at UFC Fight Night 12, Miller faced tough lightweight, Jeremy Stephens. The explosive power of Stephens was just too much for Miller in the second round as the referee called a halt to the bout after some vicious ground and pound from Stephens.

Having suffered his first official UFC loss, Miller was matched up against Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt and TUF 2 veteran, Jorge Gurgel. Gurgel had been criticized in the past for favoring a stand up approach over his revered grappling ability. Gurgel decided to listen to the critics and outworked Miller on the ground for the majority of the three rounds. However in the third round, while on top in Miller's guard, Gurgel got sloppy and Miller capitalized with a "Submission of the Night" worthy, triangle choke. Gurgel tried to fight but had to tap with just 12 seconds left in the fight.

Miller will return to action at UFC Fight Night 18, when he takes on TUF 8's Junie Browning.
