From Humble Beginnings
Clay "The Carpenter" Guida's (born December 8, 1981) professional Mixed Martial Arts career got off to a rocky start. On July 26, 2003 Guida lost his pro debut. However, Guida, a card-carrying union carpenter rebounded in his next match and beat Adam Bass by Rear Naked Choke. Over the course of his next four fights Clay went 2-2, bringing his overall record to an unimpressive 3-3
Returnign to action following an Armbar loss to Gabe Lemley, Guida faced Bill Guardiola and submitted him in the first round, with an ankle lock. That night Guida's fortunes changed as he began an amazing fifteen fight win streak, thirteen of which he would win by submission or knockout.
While riding his wave of victories Clay Guida defeated notable opponent's, such as Bart Palaszewski, Jay Estrada and Joe Jordan. Finally, the streak came to an end at King of the Cage's Redemption on the River event, when Guida succumbed to submission specialist Tristan Yunker's Rear Naked Choke.
UFC Bound
Despite losing in his last outing "The Carpenter was invited to face Strikeforce Light Champion, top ten ranked Josh Thomson. On March, 10, 2006, after winning a unanimous decision over Thomson, Guida was awarded his first championship belt. The joy of success would be short-lived, as Clay lost the title to Gilbert Melendez, via split decision, in his very first defense.
Guida then traveled to Tokyo, Japan, in order to battle Yusuke Endo at a Shooto event. "The Carpenter" lost his second straight bout, this time by Armbar. At some point during his career Guida caught the attention of Zuffa talent scouts and was offered a match with Joe Martin, whom he defeated on WEC show.
Three years and twenty-six fights later, Guida had made it to the big show, The Ultimate Fighting Championship. On October, 14, 2006 Clay Guida won his Octagon debut taking home a Rear Naked Choke win, over Justin James. Stepping up in competition Guida dropped decisions to both of his next two foes, Din Thomas and Tyson Griffin.
In his next appearance Clay came out on the winning side of a decision over Marcus Aurelio. And then lost to Roger Huerta, in what was dubbed the 2007 "Fight of the Year" by UFC.com. Since then, Guida has won his latest two matches, a first round TKO on Sammy Schiavo, and a grueling decision win against the highly-touted Mac Danzig.

Author's Note: One recorded match on Guida's record may be bogus. On 10/23/2004 Clay submitted Bill Guardiola by ankle lock at Combat-Do Fighting Challenge 1. However, on 2/5/2005 he supposedly beat "Clay Guidiolla", also by ankle lock, at -- you guessed it -- Combat-Do Fighting Challenge 2. Seems shady. Just sayin'.
