Cain Velasquez (born July 18, 1982) is an American professional mixed martial artist of Mexican descent and a former two-time All American in wrestling for Arizona state, two-time Pac-10 Champion, and Junior College National Champion for Iowa Central Community College.
He stands 6 ft. 3 in. tall and fights in the heavyweight division at approximately 240 lbs..
He trains out the American Kickboxing Academy and currently fights as a heavyweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early MMA Career
Cain Velasquez made his professional mixed martial arts debut on October 7, 2006 on the undercard of Strikeforce: Tank vs. Buentello.
He faced and defeated Jesse Fujarczyk (3-1) via TKO, 1.58 into round 1.
A little over two months later, Velasquez returned to professional competition at Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations against Jeremiah Constant. Velasquez once again made quick work of his opponent, defeating Constant via TKO 4.00 into round 1.
UFC Career
Velasquez did not fight for the entirety of 2007 with the reported reason being that he could not find an opponent that was willing to fight him.
The UFC was initially reluctant to pick up Velasquez after only two fights but after Velasquez was unable to secure any fights outside of the UFC, he was signed to a contract.
He made his UFC debut in April, 2008 on the undercard of UFC 83, the UFC's first foray into Canada. Velasquez impressed in his 2.10 demolition of Australian, Brad Morris. He was simply superior to Morris in every facet of the game with the fight finally being stopped after Velasquez dropped Morris with a crushing right hand.
Velasquez's next UFC bout came at UFC Fight Night 14, or UFC: Silva vs. Irvin on July 19th, 2008. The event was put together last minute in an attempt to counter program Affliction Entertainment's inaugural event, Affliction: Banned.
Velasquez faced tough wrestler, Jake O'Brien on the televised main card. Velasquez quickly secured a takedown on O'Brien before passing to side control. Once in side control he trapped both of O'Brien's arms so that he could not defend himself and rained down a fury of punches that had the referee stopping the bout 2.02 into round 1.
Velasquez was meant to return to the UFC octagon in December, 2008 as a part of the UFC: Fight for the Troops card against Mostapha Al Turk, but had to withdraw from the bout due to injury.
In November of 2008, Velasquez' future in the UFC became in doubt after a feud broke out between the UFC and American Kickboxing Academy's management over video game likeness rights. AKA teammate, Jon Fitch was originally released from his contract after refusing to sign the video game agreement and it was stated by UFC president, Dana White that the majority of AKA fighters that were fighting for the UFC would also be let go from their contract if they failed to co-operate.
The feud has now appeared to have been extinguished with Fitch signing the licensing agreement and AKA back on amicable terms with the UFC management.
Velasquez is currently rumored to return to action at UFC Fight Night 17 on February 7, 2009 against UFC virgin, Denis Stojinic.
