Amateur and Professional Wrestling Career
As an amateur wrestler Lashley was a three-time national champion between 1996 and 1998. He was also the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National wrestling champion in 1997 and 1998.
From 2004 to 2008, Lashley was a pro wrestler, performing primarily in the WWE. During his time in professional wrestling, Lashley was the first African American to hold the ECW title and the only person to hold the title two times.
On February 4, 2008 Lashley was released from his WWE contract and had stated that he had begun training for a career in mixed martial arts.
MMA Career
Bobby Lashley made his professional mixed martial arts debut on December 13, 2008 for the Mixed Fighting Alliance. He faced and defeated opponent, Joshua Franklin via TKO (doctor stoppage) at :41 of round 1.
For his second professional bout, Lashley was matched up against UFC hall of famer, Ken Shamrock at Square Ring Promotions' March Badness event on March 21, 2009. A change of opponent was forced however after Shamrock tested positive to steroids. TUF 8 dropout, Jason Guida stepped in as a replacement. In a lacklustre bout, Lashley used his superior wrestling to control the fight even though he was nearly submitted with a guillotine choke in the third round. At the end of the third round, Lashley was awarded a unanimous decision victory.
After the Guida fight, Lashley signed with the Maximum Fighting Championship. He made his MFC debut on May 15 against Mike Cook. Mike Cook made his entrance to the cage wearing a Rey Mysterio mask, which Lashley apparently found very offensive. Lashley defeated Cook by guillotine choke at 24 seconds of round one.
His next match will be against Bob Sapp.
