Andre Gusmao (born May 19, 1977) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt.
He stands 6 ft. 2 in. (188 cm) tall and fights in the light heavyweight division (205 lbs.).
Gusmao is an IFL veteran and currently fights as a light heavyweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
MMA Debut and IFL
Andre Gusmao made his professional mixed martial arts debut for the SportFight promotion on April 22, 2006. He faced and defeated his opponent, John Swangler via TKO in just 13 seconds of the first round.
Five months later, Gusmao found himself in the International Fight League as a part of Renzo Gracie's New York Pitbulls. He made his IFL debut against Mike Ciesnolevicz and stopped the talented grappler with punches in the second round.
In the championship final for the IFL on December 29, 2006, Gusmao aided the Pitbulls in winning the championship with a unanimous decision victory over Brent Beauparlant.
Gusmao began 2007 with a rear naked choke submission victory over Wojtek Kaszowski in the first round.
Three months later, Gusmao had what was to be his last bout for the IFL when he faced Mike Ciesnolevicz in a rematch. Gusmao once again defated him, this time via knockout due to a knee in 53 seconds.
UFC
In early 2008, Gusmao was rumored to have signed with the UFC to face David Heath at UFC 81. However, due to the fact that Gusmao was still under contract with the IFL he could not accept the bout.
Following the demise of the IFL, Gusmao was free to sign with the UFC. He made his debut at UFC 87 against UFC debutant, Jon Jones. Gusmao was favored heading into the bout against the unknown Jones but the fight did not play out how many expected it. Jones dominated the opening two rounds with huge takedowns and damaging strikes. Gusmao claimed the third after Jones tired but ultimately the unanimous decision went to Jones.
Scheduled to face Houston Alexander on the undercard of UFC 98 in May of 2009, an injury forced Alexander out and he was replaced with TUF 8's Krzysztof Soszynski. Deemed the favourite again, Gusmao was again upset. The two traded sloppy strikes early until Soszynski put Gusmao's lights out with a vicious right 3:17 into the fight.
