2H2H, Rings and Showtime

On October 24, 1999 Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem began his Mixed Martial Arts career with a Guillotine Choke victory over Ricardo Fyeet. The win was the first of two submission victories for Overeem in the It's Showtime promotion.

A scant four days after the bout with Fyeet, Alistair returned to competition, this time under the banner of the Rings organization. Between October of 1999 and his last match for the promotion held in February, 2001, Overeem achieved a mediocre Rings record of 3-3, though all of his wins were by submission or knockout.

In March of 2000 "The Demolition Man" began working for Holland-based 2 Hot 2 Handle, a promotion he continued to do business with through late 2004. His first 2H2H bout ended in a KO win over Can Sahinbas. Overeem has gone on to post a flawless 8-0 record at the promotion's events, including a submission over former UFC competitor Aaron Brink.

PRIDE

In July of 2002 Overeem made his first appearance in the PRIDE ring with a TKO victory over Yusuke Imamura. In his next PRIDE match Alistair faced Bazigit Atajev against whom he scored a TKO with a stunning knee to the body. During this time Overeem continued to fight in 2H2H bouts and eventually reached an amazing twelve wins in a row.

The next challenge for "The Demolition Man" was the PRIDE Middleweight (205lb) Grand Prix. Unfortunately for Overeem, his hopes were put on ice when he was knocked out by Chuck Liddell. After obtaining three more wins Alistair was once again beaten, this time by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

In 2005 Overeem once more entered the PRIDE Middleweight GP. Although he was seen by many as the underdog against his first round foe, Vitor Belfort, Overeem proved his doubters wrong by submitting Belfort with a Guillotine Choke. In the next tier of the tournament Alistair was paired with Igor Vovchanchyn, who also succumbed to a Guillotine Choke. The third tourney bout was fought against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, the eventual winner of the event.

Overeem's PRIDE career ended poorly, with a string of losses to some of the promotion's best fighters; Fabricio Werdum, Shogun Rua, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and finally Ricardo Arona.

StrikeForce and Dream

On June, 9, 2006 The Deomolition Man" made his StrikeForce debut, with a second win over Vitor Belfort. After the decline of PRIDE Alistair performed in a couple more matches in K-1, before facing Paul Buentello for the vacant StrikeForce World Heavyweight Championship. At 3:42 of the second round Buentello submitted to the brutal knees of Overeem. Alistair has yet to defend his title.

Following up on his success Overeem returned to Japan to work for the Dream promotion. His first match was a quick KO of Tae Hyun Lee, his second was a much higher profile contest with Mark Hunt. Dispite a giving up significant weight to Hunt, it took "The Demolition Man" only 1:11 win with a Kimura.

Most recently Overeem faced Mirko Cro Cop, the battle resulting in a No Contest after repeated groin attacks against Cro Cop. Alistair later disputed the legitimacy of Mirko's injury saying
“Tonight I was kicking his ass, I destroyed him. …The first knee was in the crotch but the second was not. CroCop just didn’t want to fight anymore.”

“I think he underestimated me, but if he wants to fight again, I’ll fight him again. I’d like to finish him.”

A rematch has not yet been scheduled.
