Profile

Alan "The Talent" Belcher (born April 24, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist and purple belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu.

He stands 6 ft. 2 in. tall and fights in the middleweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Early Career

Alan Belcher made his professional mixed martial arts debut against Tim Ellis on July 24, 2004 for the Freestyle Fighting Championships promotion. He defeated Ellis via TKO in the first round.

Belcher's 2nd and 3rd bouts came on the same night at an Impact World Championships event. He submitted his first opponent, Sergei Sergei with an armbar in the first round but lost his second match to Edwin Aguilar.

Two months later Belcher suffered another loss, as he went down unanimously in a five round decision to future UFC competitor, Marvin Eastman.

In 2006, Belcher got his career back on track, starting the year off with a victoy in a one night 8-man tournament held by the Extreme Fighting League. He defeated all three of his opponents within the distance and with strikes to capture the tournament title.

Belcher kept his winning streak running as he picked up TKO victories over Ron Fields and Marcus Sursa in his next two fights. Those two victories were followed by a decision win over Buck Meredith and a toe hold submission victory over Evert Fyeet in June of 2006.

UFC Career

With a seven fight win streak, Belcher was given a contract with the UFC. His debut came at UFC 62 against another UFC debutant in Japanese fighter, Yushin Okami. Belcher was controlled by the much stronger Okami for the length of the bout, eventually losing a unanimous decision.

In December of 2006, Belcher returned to the UFC octagon to face Jorge Santiago. Belcher showed off his punishing muay thai skills as he damaged Santiago's legs with leg kicks for the opening two rounds. In the third, Belcher feinted low and went high and caught Santiago up side his head with a kick that floored the Brazilian and earned Belcher the KO victory.

In his most high profile bout of his career at the time, Belcher faced TUF 3 middleweight winner, Kendall Grove at UFC 69. A flat Belcher was dominated by Grove and eventually submitted via Brabo choke at 4:42 of round 2.

Given a chance to make a quick return to competition following the disappointing loss to Grove, Belcher accepted a fight as a short notice replacement for Eric Schafer to face Sean Salmon at light heavyweight at UFC 71. The fight was over quickly as Salmon shot in and Belcher latched onto a guillotine choke which forced the tap from Salmon.

At UFC 77, Belcher returned to the middleweight division where he faced TUF 3 semi finalist, Kalib Starnes on the main card. Belcher's muay thai was the deciding factor in the fight as he brutalized Starnes with punches and knees, eventually opening a deep gash on Starnes' forehead. In the second round after a doctor inspected the cut the fight was stopped and Belcher was awarded the TKO victory.

Originally scheduled to face Ricardo Almeida at UFC 81, Belcher became ill in the week leading up to the fight and had to pull out of the bout. He was then instead to face Patrick Cote at UFC 83, however Cote pulled out with injury and Belcher was matched up against UFC newcomer, Jason Day. Belcher scored an early takedown and Day worked immediately for rubber guard. From the rubber guard, Day landed some hard elbows that hurt Belcher. Once the fight hit the feet, Belcher looked shaky and Day capitalized with vicious combos. Belcher was not defending himself and so the referee stepped in and stopped the bout.

After the frustrating loss to Day, Belcher faced off against TUF 3 middleweight runner up, Ed Herman at UFC Fight Night 15. In a close fight, two out of three judges decided that Belcher's muay thai attack was more substantial than Herman's wrestling and awarded Belcher the split decision victory.

At UFC 93, Belcher was given the job of welcoming middleweight standout and PRIDE veteran, Denis Kang to the UFC. The first round was all Kang as he scored takedowns and passed Belcher's guard and landed stinging punches on the feet. The second round was going much the same way until Kang got lazy and Belcher seized a guillotine choke which forced the tap, giving Belcher the most notable victory of his career to date. The victory also gained Belcher the $40,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus.

Belcher will next face Yoshihiro Akiyama on the main card of UFC 100.
