Profile

Akitoshi "Ironman" Tamura (born May 31, 1980) is a Japanese professional mixed martial artist training out of the Tsudanuma Dojo.

He stands 5 ft. 9 in. (176 cm) tall and fights in the bantamweight division (135 lbs.).

Tamura was the Shooto World Lightweight Champion and currently fights as a bantamweight for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.

Shooto

Akitoshi Tamura made his professional mixed martial arts debut at a Shooto event on April 8, 2001. He lost a technical decision to Eiji Murayama after two rounds.

He picked up his first professional victory four months later as he scored a decision win of his own over Koichi Tanaka.

A draw to Jin Kazeta and a loss to Hiroshi Komatsu followed before Tamura picked up consecutive decision victories in 2003.

A rematch with Murayama ended in a draw in March of 2004, and Tamura's inconsistent run would continue as he would split his next two bouts - defeating Guseyn Aliev and losing to Hideki Kadowaki.

After two more victories, Tamura faced off against the highly touted, Takeshi "Lion" Inoue. Tamura would be defeated by Inoue via majority decision after three rounds.

In 2006, Tamura had his first two bouts outside of Shooto as he knocked off Ian Loveland and Masaomi Saito in smaller Japanese promotions.

Upon his return to Shooto, Tamura got a rude welcoming as his lights were shut off by Tenkei Fujimiya in just 2:10 of the first frame of their clash.

Tamura got back on track though to close out 2006 with victories over Sakae Kasuya and "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura.

To begin 2007, Tamura earned redemption over Fujimiya and picked up the Shooto lightweight (143 lbs.) Pacific Rim title as he defeated him via unanimous decision.

The win earned Tamura a shot at the Shooto World Lightweight Title held by Takeshi Inoue. Tamura notched his second avenging win in as many fights as he upset Inoue to take the title via unanimous decision.

Tamura was unable to defend the belt however as he was defeated for a second time by Hideki Kadowaki via majority decision in March, 2008.

Two months later, Tamura submitted Japanese legend, Rumina Sato with a north/south choke midway through the third round.

WEC

Tamura somewhat surprsingly parted ways with Shooto after the Sato victory and linked up with the WEC. He made his WEC debut as a featherweight (145 lbs.) at WEC 37 against former IFL featherweight champion, Wagnney Fabiano. Tamura was content to methodically work off his back for the duration of the fight, while Fabiano did likewise from the top. With under a minute left in the third and final round, Fabiano turned it up and submitted Inoue with an arm triangle choke.

Following the disappointing defeat, Tamura decided to drop down to the bantamweight (135 lbs.) division. His bantamweight debut came at WEC 40 against former title contender, Manny Tapia. Tamura controlled Tapia for the majority of the fight and bagged a unanimous decision victory.

At WEC 43, Tamura will get back in action when he faces Damacio Page on the show's main card.
