Pre-Event Notes
Originally planned for this event was a bout between Gegard Mousasi and Vitor Belfort. The bout was nixed though once both parties couldn't decide upon a weight as Belfort wanted it at middleweight while Mousasi stated he could no longer make the division. Both fighters were instead given new opponents.
Tim Sylvia was to face Paul Buentello but after getting knocked out by Ray Mercer just over a month out from the event's date he was pulled by the Athletic commission and replaced by Gilbert Yvel.
Takanori Gomi was to face Brett Cooper but a failure to agree to a catchweight saw a change in opponents. Cooper was then to face Akbarh Arreola in a catchweight bout but after getting knocked out close to the event's date was pulled.
LC Davis was a replacement for Din Thomas.
On July 22, 2009, it was announced by the California State Athletic Commission that Josh Barnett wouldn't be licensed to fight after failing a drug test.
With Barnett pulled from the event, Affliction began to scramble to fight a last minute replacement to face Fedor. Middleweight, Vitor Belfort was the early favorite to take the position with rumors of Brett Rogers, Jeff Monson, Bobby Lashley and Muhammed Lawal also in the running.
On July 24, 2009, Affliction Entertainment announced that Affliction: Trilogy was cancelled.
