Overview
Affliction Entertainment is a US based mixed martial arts promotion company. They are an independent branch of Affliction Clothing.
Affliction broadcasts on pay-per-view with the undercards of their events having been shown on Fox Sports Net and HDNet.
Tom Atencio is the vice president and the "face" of the company. Affliction also shares partnerships with M-1 Global, Donald Trump (who owns significant equity stake in the company), and Golden Boy Promotions.
History
Affliction as a mixed martial arts promotion was supposedly created after the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banned its fighters from wearing Affliction clothing at their events. The UFC's decision supposedly came about after learning Affliction was considering promoting MMA events.
Affliction gained MMA fans attention as they became the promotion to lure former PRIDE heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko to the US where he could face legitimate competition.
After their first event, Affliction: Banned, many persons in the media and mixed martial arts community questioned Affliction's business strategy after their payroll far outweighed the money they earned from their gate.
Affliction had to cancel/postpone their second event, Affliction: Day of Reckoning from October of 2008 to January of 2009. Rumors abounded it was due to poor ticket tales for their "non-Fedor" main event of Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett. Affliction maintained they were simply rescheduling the event due to their new relationship with boxing promoting powerhouse, Golden Boy Promotions.
